22 Tsunami Detection Devices Off

Id Nasional. The need for a tsunami early detection tool, including tsunami sirens, is already urgent given the tsunami-prone areas of Indonesia. Moreover, existing tsunami detection devices are no longer operational.

Head of Data Information and Public Relations Center for the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) Sutopo Purwo Nugroho revealed, Indonesia had 22 tsunami detection devices (Buoys) since 2008. However, these devices have been inactive since 2012.

"Indonesia used to have a network of tsunami as many as 22 tsunami buoys. Built by Indonesia there are 8 units, Germany 10 units, Malaysia 2 units, and the United States 2 units. The tsunami buoy has been made since 2008, it hasn't been operating anymore since 2012, "said Sutopo at Graha BNPB, Jakarta yesterday.

Sutopo revealed that the existence of vandalism and the limited maintenance and operation costs had made the tsunami buoys not functioning. This condition of course makes it difficult for officers to ascertain whether the tsunami actually happened in the ocean or not.

"We currently only rely on 5 international-owned tsunami buoys around the territory of Indonesia, namely 1 unit west of Aceh (belonging to India), 1 unit in the Andaman Sea (belonging to Thailand), 2 units south of Sumba near Australia (owned by Australia), and 1 more unit in northern Papua (owned by the US), "explained Sutopo.

He stressed, most of the damage to the tsunami buoy was due to vandalism and the absence of operating and maintenance costs. According to him, many tsunami buoys in the ocean were damaged by individuals. For example, buoys were installed in the Banda Sea (April 2009), but in September 2009 they were damaged and washed north of Sulawesi.

"I once asked BPPT about the price of one unit of buoy if it was purchased from America. Apparently, the price is IDR 7.8 billion. Meanwhile, if we make it ourselves, 1 unit is only IDR 4 billion. Yes, if we need around 25 units for the entire territory of Indonesia, for the buoy alone it will need a minimum of Rp100 billion, "said Sutopo.

He also explained that in InaTEWS (Indonesian Tsunami Early Warning System), tsunami buoys are only one part of tsunami early warning. Without a tsunami buoy, tsunami early warning (EWS) continues to run because tsunami early warning is based on modeling generated from seismic earthquake networks detected.

According to Sutopo, 2-5 minutes after the earthquake, InaTEWS / BMKG immediately provided extensive early warning to the community according to the flow of the tsunami early warning. This system has been running well, especially if there is a buoy, it will definitely improve. Because, the buoy is there to ensure that the tsunami hit the ocean before the beach. Ideally in a tsunami early warning system, all components are available both from upstream and downstream. However, of course it requires equipment and considerable operational costs each year.

The tsunami buoy is only to ensure that a tsunami is detected in the ocean before crashing the coast. When the tsunami hit the coast, the tsunami height was detected from tidal devices / networks and GPS on the coast.

Sutopo also said that Indonesia currently needs 1,000 tsunami sirens. While the tsunami sirens from BMKG are currently only 52 units, so there are still 948 units. Moreover, with Indonesia's tsunami-prone region, since 1629 until now there have been 177 major and minor disasters.

Previously, Head of the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) Dwikorita Karnawati had ordered his staff to check and replace all damaged tsunami early warning devices. He also said that he had put forward many tools to repair the damage and non-functioning of the tsunami detector. Among other things, a weather monitoring tool.

"We propose tools for detection sensors, both earthquake and tsunami, both weather monitoring, both weather and maritime weather. There are also tsunami seismometers and radars. We also propose the addition of sea cables, seismic and tsunami sensors on the sea floor, "he said.
